چکیده

There are few reports comparing the muscle fiber morphometry between human fetuses and adults. Data on fetal and adult muscle fibers would be valuable in understanding muscle development and various muscle diseases. This study investigated human muscle fiber growth to clarify the difference between the facial muscles and skeletal muscles. The specimens were obtained from three (6-month-old) male fetuses and 11 Japanese male cadavers between the ages of 43 and 86 years (average: 71.8 years). Human orbicularis oculi, orbicularis oris, and buccinators muscles (facial muscles) and masseter and biceps brachii muscles (skeletal muscles) were resected. We counted the muscle fibers and measured their transverse area. We also calculated the number of muscle fibers per mm2 (NMF) and the average transverse area of the muscle fibers (TAMF). The average NMF in the orbicularis oculi, orbicularis oris, buccinator, masseter, and biceps brachii muscles in fetuses was respectively, 35, 31, 19, 37 and 22 times greater than in adults. The average fetus/adult ratio of the TAMF in the orbicularis oculi, orbicularis oris, buccinator, masseter and biceps brachii muscles was 5.0%, 4.5%, 4.0%, 2.4% and 4.1% respectively. The average NMF in all of the muscles decreased after birth; however, the maximum NMF and decrease with the natural aging process it varied among muscles examined. The average TAMF for all of the muscles increased after birth. We concluded that the increase in the TAMF is related to the emergence of fetal movements and functional demands after birth. Chapter 1

Protective effect of quercetin on skeletal and neural tube teratogenicity induced by cyclophosphamide in rat fetuses

Cyclophosphamide (CP) is a drug commonly used to treat neoplastic disease and some autoimmune diseases. It is also a well-known and well-studied teratogen causing a variety of birth defects in fetuses of pregnant women treated with the drug. There are many reports that show the adverse effects of CP can be decreased by use of antioxidant drugs. It appears that, quercetin has antioxidant effect....

Sports activity done five days before PET/CT results in augmented FDG uptake in skeletal muscles

Increased metabolic activity in muscle secondary to excessive muscle activity during the uptake phase and shortly before FDG injection is a known phenomenon. We present FDG PET/CT findings in a young male, known case of carcinoma maxilla His scan showed diffuse increased metabolic activity in multiple skeletal muscle groups. There was history of unaccustomed, strenuous sports activity of skiing...

Valproic Acid-Induced Skeletal Defects and Spina Bifida in Rat Fetuses

Purpose: Among antiepileptic drugs, valproic acid (VA) is a well known teratogenic agent. We previously reported that maternal (VA) administration of VA during critical periods of rat pregnancy can produce very rare CNS defect, syringomyelia. The purpose of the present study was whether VA can affect other organs, based on this finding, we studied the teratogenic effects of it on rat developing...

Effect of progressive resistance exercise on β1 integrin and vinculin protein levels in slow-and fast-twitch skeletal muscles of male rats

Introduction: Skeletal muscle is a flexible and ever changing tissue and the role of costameric proteins in its response to different stimuli is not well defined. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of progressive resistance exercise on β1 integrin and vinculin proteins in fast and slow twitch skeletal muscles of male rats. Methods: Twelve male Wistar rats (weight: 298±5.2 gr...

The Posterior Muscles of the Auricle: Anatomy and Surgical Applications

Objective: Prominent ears are generally considered as primary cartilage deformities, but some authors consider that posterior auricular muscles malposition could play a role in the genesis of this malformation. Study design: Auricle dissections of 30 cadavers and histologic sections of 2 fetuses’ ears. Methods: Posterior area of the auricle has been dissected in 24 cadavers preserved with zinc ...
